The Shalem Center Responds

The following is from an email sent by Dan Polisar, Shalem Center’s President, in response to yesterday’s post. We hope to have additional information later today. “Natan Sharansy submitted his letter of resignation as the head of the Shalem Center’s Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies on June 30, 2009, after a week-long transition period in which he wrapped up his responsibilities as head of that Institute - a position he held since the Institute’s founding in late 2006. Is Sharansky DoubleDipping

In late June, following a tense week of debate on revised governance policies for the Jewish Agency, Natan Sharansky was elected JAFI’s Chair of the Executive. Those supporting the approved changes were clearly looking to break the tradition of one individual holding the most senior professional position at both JAFI and the WZO; this as a prelude to reconfiguring the complex relationship between the two organizations. In order to receive the nomination, Sharansky even provided written assuranceA perk of having a semi-successful blog is that sometimes, people of real importance notice you. How to bribe the Elder

A perk of having a semi-successful blog is that sometimes, people of real importance notice you. And sometimes, they even ask you to review their books or link to their websites. Recently, I have gotten a few of those sorts of email, accompanied by very nice compliments, so I will return the favor. SHARANSKY ELECTED HEAD OF JEWISH AGENCY

At long last, the man whom Ariel Sharon undemocratically barred from running for the position has rightfully obtained it : Natan Sharansky, the 61-year-old author, activist and former Soviet dissident, was elected chairman of the Jewish Agency by a unanimous vote of the 120-member Jewish Agency Assembly on Thursday afternoon. "This closed a great circle for me," Sharansky told The Jerusalem Post shortly after the election. The circle "began in Moscow, where we lived as Jews without identity,

CAMERA Israeli Diplomat Pressure Ben Gurion Over LA Times Column Supporting Sanctions

Neve Gordon is a professor at Israel’s Ben Gurion University. He is a long-time activist dedicated to Israeli-Arab peace. A few days ago he published a column in the L.A. Times in which he endorsed the Boycott, Divestment Sanctions movement . He put it this way: I am convinced that outside pressure is the only answer. Over the last three decades, Jewish settlers in the occupied territories have dramatically increased their numbers. The myth of the united Jerusalem has led to the cI didn’t know until yesterday that Gerald G. May of the Shalem Institute died in 2005. May wrote on contemplative prayer and psychology. His best are Will and Spirit and Addiction and Grace . The latter is about “attachment” and grace, but the marketng department of his publisher thought “addiction” would attract more attention. Belman in the Ulpan

By Ted Belman I have now completed five weeks in my Ulpan out of a total twenty-five weeks. It is tough slogging at least for me, an aging AK with hearing, memory and brain impairment. But the twenty and thirty years old are thriving. We arrive at the Ulpan at 8:00 am and are immediately immersed in writing, talking and reading Hebrew. No one takes their eyes and attention off the teachers for a second, at least I don’t. We have about five different teachers who rotate. This is to exppse uChristianity Today Online is featuring what amounts to a promotional piece on “spiritual directors” that caught my attention. The article introduces the practice of using spiritual directors to evangelicals, most of whom have never heard of them. The piece details the author, Alice Fryling’s, warm and positive experiences with the spiritual director she encountered in a mainline church near the University of Wisconsin many years ago. At first glance, who would argue with a ministry that supp
